What do we mean by simple freedom?
Does it feel like 24/7 is not enough for you to accomplish the tasks you have set out for yourself? Do you feel like you’re always running to stand still, trying to focus on a myriad of tasks yet oddly feel like you’re not accomplishing much?
It could be the fact that we know our time on earth is limited so most of us go crazy trying to cram as many things as possible into our existence. And then, when we feel overwhelmed, we start asking ourselves when we are ever going to be free from all the things that must get done.
We seek freedom, not the kind of freedom usually associated with freedom from tyranny, colonization or slavery; just simple freedom... to have some time for ourselves, to watch a funny movie and laugh our heads off, to be with our loved ones, and to smell the flowers.
Our quest for this simple freedom leads us to the Zen approach to living. This short, three-letter word just about sums it all up: To get the best out of life, less is more- less stress and less unnecessary stuff. The key word is "simplify."
Say no to junk
What areas in our lives need simplifying? Well, everything! See that desk over there that looks like a mini-mountain with all the paperwork piled on it? Do you really have to tackle all that paperwork today or can you pick just three or five that need your immediate attention and put the rest aside so that you don’t get exhausted just by merely looking at it?
Rummage through your drawers. There’s the dried corsage you wore on your Prom Night 20 years ago and a love note a guy wrote to you way back in the fourth grade together with tons of pens, photos, paper clips, and old business cards.
Sentimentality and deep attachment to the past are anathema to Zen living. Zen is about the here and now. Having such things around you won’t make your life any easier, just heavier. To realize simple freedom, it’s important to de-clutter. So, discard everything you no longer use like old suits, bags and shoes.
One word of caution, though. De-cluttering your life shouldn’t make your life more miserable.
There shouldn’t be a pressure to make yourself a super organized and practical person overnight because if you do, the more you deprive yourself of your simple freedom to do things in your own pace. Eliminating your clutter one place at a time would be less taxing.
Quality, not just quantity
Technology is supposed to make our lives easier, but sometimes, you get more quality output using “the old way.” Using the “quick and easy” automatic drip coffee maker saves more time, but the quality of the brew you get from the French Press is better. And using a cartridge razor may slash by half the time required for shaving using an old-style razor, but with the latter, you get to shave every other day as opposed to daily with the modern razor, and you get smoother results.
Some people have complained that technology tends to complicate things. Maybe, or it could be that technology is more efficient; hence, we are doing more than we did before and are therefore more hurried and stressed as a result of it. We set our expectations higher, our to-do-list is longer and then we flare up when things don’t go our way. The idea is to balance quality and quantity. This is one of the keys to having the simple freedom to enjoy our lives more.
Accept life for what it is, not for what it should be
Can you imagine how much energy we spend and stress we gain by focusing on what should be rather than making the most of what we already have? We have a perfectly good working car but we borrow $20,000 to buy a luxury car that uses more gas and then worry ourselves to death that the car might get scratched or worse, stolen.
Our nose is okay, but you know you would feel so much more attractive if it were a bit smaller... really? The more you crave for what isn’t there, the more you feel disconnected from your life. All these random thoughts steal away our simple freedom.
To get you on the path to fulfill your desire for simple freedom via the Zen philosophy, here are some sites you may find useful:
Zen living and natural stress relief
Zen living is the essence of simple freedom. The outcome is natural stress relief. Because your mind is not cluttered with unnecessary chaos, you are naturally less stressed.
Simple freedom
starts with changing your mind. So, give yourself permission to do this. Begin to look at circumstances in your life differently. When a stressful or unwelcome event occurs, rise above it, and look at it from a different perspective.
So-called problems are not ours to deal with. They do not belong to us. All we have to do is take a deep breathe and act out of gratitude, rather than reacting out of fear or stress. Things happen. Have fun. You may surprise yourself, and make some deicious lemonade out of a batch of bitter old lemons.
Simple Freedom / Conclusion
No matter what technique you choose to develop focus and inner calm the benefits will be far-reaching. Not only will you be less affected by life's daily stresses, you will be in an optimal position to attain prosperity in your working life as well.
